Scapegoating the refugees

Comments Off

Published on Al-Ahram weekly online, by Salah Nasrawi, Nov 26, 2015.

A tide of increased xenophobia in Europe in the aftermath of the Paris attacks is making refugees pawns in the debate over terrorism.

On a street corner in the upscale Cairo neighbourhood of Zamalek, a small crowd of visitors gathers outside the fortified building of the German embassy early in the morning on each working day.   Continue Reading…

The Power of Nightmares

Published on naked capitalism (first on BBC), by Lambert Strether, Nov 27, 2015.

Here’s a little something to rouse you from your post-Thanksgiving torpor; the first part of a three-part 2004 series by Adam Curtis called “The Power of Nightmares.” The title seems strangely a propos, what?

See WikiPedia’s summary. Continue Reading…

Comments Off

Published on International Business Times IBS, by Mark Piggott, Nov 26, 2015.

A former senior risk consultant at scandal-hit Royal Bank of Scotland RBS is reported to be planning to make a number of explosive allegations about deception and greed within the bank’s upper echelons, even as the 2008 financial crisis was underway. Victor Hong, based in the US, is set to appear in court in the UK as part of a major action being taken against the bank by its own shareholders. Continue Reading…

Turkey Has Destroyed Russia’s Hope of Western Cooperation

Comments Off

Published on Dissident Voice, by Paul Craig Roberts, Nov 24, 2015.

… Turkey’s unprovoked shoot-down of a Russian military aircraft over Syria raises interesting questions. It seems unlikely that the Turkish government would commit an act of war against a much more powerful neighbor unless Washington had cleared the attack. Turkey’s government is not very competent, but even the incompetent know better than to put themselves into a position of facing Russia alone. Continue Reading…

When Workers Fight

The therapists, counselors, and social workers at Kaiser Permanente in California have won a magnificent victory. In a last minute retreat, in the face of an open-ended strike, Kaiser, the giant California health care corporation, settled with 1400 workers and their union, the National Union of Healthcare Workers (NUHW).   Continue Reading…

The Realism of Audacity – Rethinking Revolutionary Strategy Today

Comments Off

Published on The Bullet, Socialist Project’s E-Bulletin No. 1188, by Panagiotis Sotiris, Nov 23, 2015.

  • In a certain way, I feel a certain unease since the entire Greek Left has some form of responsibility for the fact that Greece is not currently a laboratory of hope; rather it is a reason for despair. What I am going to say should be taken as a form of self-criticism rather than a declaration. I consider myself part of the problem.   Continue Reading…

Comments Off

Published on Dissident Voice, by Paul Craig Roberts, Nov 21st, 2015.

… Once Russia is in a coalition against ISIS, Russia will have to make compromises. Putin will be told that Russia can have ISIS, but Russia has to turn Assad’s fate over to the West. If Putin balks, the Western media will blame Putin for torpedoing the war against ISIS.   Continue Reading…

Paris attacked by Islamists … no, I no more will listen to any of these talkshows. As mentionned, again so called terrorists forgot their passports on the crime scene … do you really believe THAT?

I no more do. Thus, forget the whole bla-bla. To say it with the words of the belgian sociologist Jean-Claude Paye / (engl)… on Passport, le retour:

… l’apparente stupidité répétitive des terroristes doit être interprétée comme un artifice rhétorique du Pouvoir pour sidérer les citoyens. C’est parce que le récit officiel est absurde qu’on ne peut pas, qu’on ne doit pas le contester …;

Non-French War Deaths Matter

Comments Off

Published on Let’s Try Democracy, by David Swanson, Nov 14, 2015.

We are all France. Apparently. Though we are never all Lebanon or Syria or Iraq for some reason. Or a long, long list of additional places.

We are led to believe that U.S. wars are not tolerated and cheered because of the color or culture of the people being bombed and occupied. But let a relatively tiny number of people be murdered in a white, Christian, Western-European land, with a pro-war government, and suddenly sympathy is the order of the day. Continue Reading…

How Outside Normalcy Should an Outsider Be?

Comments Off

Published on Dissident Voice, by James Hoover, Nov 10, 2015.

Ben Carson is the quiet, almost somnolent, version of Donald Trump. He is, like Trump, a political outsider, but a crafty politician all the same, without the reality TV persona of Donald Trump. Carson seems to share other attributes with “the Donald” though not commonly discussed in the media.   Continue Reading…
