A no-strings basic income? If it works for the royal family, it can work for us all

Comments Off

Published on The Guardian, by John O’Farrell, Jan 7, 2015.

A living wage for all of us, whether we’re in work or not, could rebalance the economy and create a generation of entrepreneurs.

y first response to the notion of a universal basic income (UBI) was: “Well, really. That is never going to happen! I mean, it’s completely unaffordable. I mean, it would be political suicide for any progressive party suggesting it.” And then I may have started to froth at the mouth slightly and ask if it would be paid to refugees … // Continue Reading…

What’s Next? Parecon, or Participatory Economics

Comments Off

Published on The Next System.org, by MICHAEL ALBERT, Jan 6, 2016.

People now fighting economic injustice have no right to decide how future people should live. But we do have a responsibility to provide an institutional setting that facilitates future people deciding for themselves their own conditions of life and work. To this end, participatory economics, or parecon, describes the core institutions required to generate solidarity, equity, self-management, and an ecologically sound and classless economy.   Continue Reading…

Published on ZNet (first on Truthout), by William i. Robinson, Jan 4, 2015.

… The top 80 billionaires were worth $1.9 trillion in 2014, an amount equal to the bottom 50 percent. These 80 billionaires saw a 50 percent rise in their wealth in just four years, from 2010 to 2014, during which time the poorest 50 percent saw a drop in their wealth. In other words, there has been a huge transfer of wealth in a very short period of time from the poorest half of humanity to the richest 80 individuals on the planet … // Continue Reading…

Syria is the Middle Eastern Stalingrad

Comments Off

Published on Dissident Voice (first on New Eastern Outlook), by Andre Vltchek, January 2, 2016.

  • Day and night, for years, an overwhelming force has been battering this quiet nation, one of the cradles of human civilization.
  • Hundreds of thousands have died, and millions have been forced to flee abroad or have been internally displaced. In many cities and villages, not one house is left intact.
  • But Syria is, against all odds, still standing. Continue Reading…

The Pope and the Queen, both announcing ‘end of world’ – my comment:

  • If you repeat anywhat long enough, it becomes a self fullfilling prophecy. I agree that part of the highest elites of this planet try to extinct most of us, but it is our believe that makes it finally happen.
  • No more accept their brainwashing by Mainstream Medias, stop copying their behavior, we are different, we do not need to be like them.
  • Our humanity must learn them, impose them another behavior. So let’s take back our planet and decide ourselves about our common destiny. Let’s stop stupid wars serving only these mad group by weakening us.
  • We have to build up a prosperous planet … for us all.
  • … and to the remaining 1% of us (in fact, 1% minus 0.99…9%): it’s on your consciousness to accelerate a process in which you may loose much more than you immagine, as thankfulness for service is not part of your chiefs’ genetic code.

Top 7 Middle East Foreign Policy Challenges in 2016

Published on Zcomm.org (first on Informed Comment), by Juan Cole, Jan 1, 2015.

… But in 2016 the Middle East is likely to be the hot button issue in US foreign policy. While I recognize the enormous Iran breakthrough as a major feather in the administration’s cap, I’m a critic of many of the Obama administration’s other policies in the region. We are allied with allies of al-Qaeda in Syria, allied with the Saudis in bombing Yemen, allied with the hard line Shiites in Iraq, allied with the hard line Israeli squatters in the Palestinian West Bank, and in some arenas where a little diplomacy would be helpful, we haven’t done much. These policies are pernicious and self-contradictory, and this administration only has a year to change some of them … // Continue Reading…

Some Women Are More Invisible

Comments Off

Published on ZNet (first on teleSUR english), by Cynthia Peters, Dec 31, 2015.

There are two countries in the world that have no laws mandating paid maternity leave. One is Papua New Guinea. The other is the United States of America.

This was one of the points made by the U.N. Working Group on discrimination against women, which visited the U.S. recently and expressed shock at their findings. After politely acknowledging the U.S.’s commitment to liberty, the report went on to lambaste the government for failing women on many levels, including:   Continue Reading…
